FROM THE EDITOR
Dear Readers,
I’m excited to share with you the Fall 2025 edition of the Wharton Sports Analytics Journal, which includes a new AI special feature. This semester, we showcase innovative research in sports that are underrepresented in the literature, such as badminton, junior tennis, and speedcubing, alongside work covering impactful sports business topics.
We are also excited to highlight the increasing applications of AI in sports research. As Editor-in-Chief, I’m proud that the journal continues to provide a global platform for young researchers and encourages creative uses of AI across a variety of research applications. We remain committed to being a place where students can share their work and help advance knowledge within the sports analytics community.
As always, I’d like to invite any high school, undergraduate, or graduate student doing research in sports analytics to submit their work to the journal. We would love to consider your submission for our upcoming editions.
We hope this edition offers a fresh perspective on the depth of questions that can be asked about sports and the breadth of new technologies and methods that can help answer them. Please let us know your thoughts and feedback as we strive to bring you the very best of sports analytics.
Sincerely,
Katherine Comer, W’26
Editor-in-Chief

Aims & Scope
The Wharton Sports Analytics Research Journal publishes rigorous, well-written sports analytics research that is accessible to a broad audience. We welcome submissions from strong undergraduate students, advanced high school students, independent researchers, and practitioners with a serious interest in sports analytics.
Our standards are high, and strong statistical methods are always required. Every paper must use methodology that is appropriate to the research question and data, with careful attention to study design, modeling choices, uncertainty quantification, and responsible interpretation. Submissions are not required to introduce novel statistical methods or highly technical innovations, but they must apply established methods correctly and thoughtfully, clearly stating assumptions and limitations and supporting claims with evidence.
The journal prioritizes work that combines statistical rigor with effective communication. Papers should present a clear question, document data sources, and explain methods and results in a way that analytically minded readers can follow without specialized graduate training. Transparency and reproducibility are strongly valued, including clear descriptions of the analysis pipeline and results that can be independently checked.
We especially seek contributions that deepen our understanding of sports—work that illuminates how games are played, how performance is measured, how strategy and decision-making unfold, and what evidence can (and cannot) tell us about outcomes. By bridging the gap between highly technical academic outlets and informal sports analytics commentary, the journal aims to broaden participation in the field while showcasing research that is statistically rigorous, interpretable, and genuinely informative.

Call for Submissions
We are now accepting submissions for our upcoming edition. The journal is an outgrowth of the remarkable work done by graduate, undergraduate, and high school students — whether it’s research into a sports performance-related question, exploring datasets for interesting outcomes, or diving deep into age-old theories. We welcome original work across all areas of sports analytics and encourage submissions from men’s and women’s sports and individual and team sports.
All submissions undergo anonymous peer review to ensure quality and relevance, following the Submission Guidelines. Selected articles will be published in the Wharton Sports Analytics Journal and shared with a diverse audience of sports and analytics professionals.
